The Disconnect

Eighteen months ago, I landed on the West Shore of Central Pennsylvania. The move wasn't for a job or a change of scenery; it was a deliberate choice to be closer to my family. As a technologist who has spent a lifetime building systems, I value clean architecture, and my family's architecture needed a redesign. But in fixing one connection, I immediately felt the absence of another.

"Where do the tech folks hang out?" It was the first question I asked my daughter and her husband. For me, it wasn't just a casual inquiry. I’m an experienced community builder. Back in New Jersey, just outside the magnetic pull of New York City, my wife and I were deeply embedded in creating the local tech scene. She ran the NJ SQL Server User Group, and I was a fixture at both the NJ and NYC .Net User Groups.

I'm what you might call a "recovering introvert." By nature, I’m more comfortable with a keyboard than a crowd. But over two decades ago, I gave my first user group talk. I discovered that speaking to a room full of people who share your passions isn't public speaking; it's just chatting with friends using a projector. I had found my tribe. While my friends coached Little League or volunteered for other great causes, I realized the tech community was my cause. It was where I belonged and where I could make a difference.

So, when my daughter told me, "Dad, it isn't like NJ here," I felt a familiar problem space opening up. She pointed me toward the Tech Council of Central PA (TCCP), and I jumped in with both feet. It's a great organization, and my involvement has grown quickly. Since the beginning of this year, I've been co-hosting the Digital Transformation and AI Virtual Learning Groups, and I'm honored to say I'll be joining the TCCP board this December. But even through this wonderful engagement, I noticed the broader ecosystem was different. The meetups I was used to had largely fizzled out. I found a vibrant community over in Lancaster (shout out to Tech Lancaster), but the distance from the West Shore made it a logistical challenge. It became clear that the Central PA tech scene was a collection of isolated islands—pockets of brilliance in Dauphin, Cumberland, York, and Lancaster counties, all operating independently, without a unifying fabric.

Yet, I kept running into us "out in the wild." At coffee shops, in restaurants, even at the bar last night where the guys next to me were deep in conversation about a new Oracle ERP implementation. The technologists are here. We are a significant part of this region's economy and culture. We just aren't connected.

The Dispatch Blueprint

I looked at the Central PA tech scene not as a social club, but as a fragmented information ecosystem. It was a classic systems problem—a network with plenty of powerful nodes but without an efficient protocol to connect them. Last winter, I decided to stop observing the problem and start architecting a solution. My vision is to build a future where every Central PA tech professional feels connected and empowered to build a world-class career right here at home, transforming our scattered professional 'islands' into a unified, powerful community and establishing the region as a vibrant, recognized tech hub.

The Mission: A High-Value Protocol for a Time-Starved Audience

To solve this, I considered the usual routes. Start a meetup? Launch a blog? Both felt like "Legacy Logic." The modern challenge isn't just creating content; it's about breaking through the noise of the algorithms that govern our digital lives. The most effective way to build a real, engaged community today is to create a direct connection, one that respects the scarcest resource any of us have: attention.

That's why I created the Digizenburg Dispatch.

The name is intentional. "Digizen", as in Digital Citizen, is the perfect term for our tribe. We are the "Gen-Digizen"—a cross-generational cohort defined not by age, but by a shared mindset and a common appreciation for technology. And "-burg" is a nod to our shared geography.

The mission of the Dispatch is simple and direct: To be the indispensable hub for Central Pennsylvania's technology professionals. We exist to deliver curated local tech news, connect professionals with each other, and cultivate a shared cultural experience. It's important to state that the Dispatch isn't here to replace the excellent work already being done. Groups like the TCCP, Tech Lancaster, and other local meetups are vital. They should continue to focus on their specific goals. The Dispatch is here to be the connective tissue—the protocol that links these powerful nodes to create a tighter, more visible, and more collaborative Central PA tech community.

The Process: What to Expect in Your Inbox

Because we value your time, the Dispatch is not a daily newsletter. It's a focused, twice-weekly briefing, with each edition serving a distinct purpose in strengthening our community.

• The Deep Dive (The Technical Edition): One edition each week is dedicated to a substantive technical or strategic topic. The goal here is to expose Central PA to the trends, techniques, and conversations happening in the major tech hubs. It's your weekly infusion of high-level, actionable insight designed to keep your skills sharp and your perspective broad.

• The Local Feed (The Community Edition): The second edition is focused inward. Its primary goal is to help us find our tribe by highlighting local news, non-tech events, and opportunities.
